Functions of the Council
The main function of the Medical Council of Jamaica (MCJ) set up under the Medical Act of 1976, is to protect the general public from inadequately trained and untrained practitioners.
The MCJ keeps and publishes in the Jamaica Grazette, a Medical Register of doctors they have assessed as being adequately trained and experienced, who are allowed to examine and treat members of the public.
It also endeavours to ensure the maintenance of proper medical standards including the proper professional conduct of medical practitioners.
